The Vancouver International Jazz Festival kicks off this weekend, with plenty of North Shore venues getting in on all the jazzy action and good vibrations. Catch the Delvon Lamarr Organ trio, a Seattle-based trifecta channeling vintage soul sounds, simple grooves and tasty guitar lines, who are playing a free show at the West Vancouver Memorial Library tonight at 7:30 p.m. This weekend, music fans can also catch Ayrad & François Houle Trio performing Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Civic Plaza along Lonsdale Avenue as well as Latin dance band Mazacote who are performing Sunday at 1 p.m. at Lynn Valley Village.
All the bears on the North Shore can get stuffed! We’re talking teddy bears, of course. St. Andrew’s United Church in North Vancouver is inviting children and their families to its 13th annual Teddy Bear Picnic from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. The free event encourages eager youngsters to grab their favourite teddy bear and come on down to St. Andrew's Park to enjoy music, face painting, a bouncy castle, storytelling time, and much more.
How deep does your knowledge of Deep Cove’s natural splendour go? Those looking for a refresher should be sure to check out the Discovery Waterfront Walk happening on Sunday. The North Vancouver Save Our Shores Society-backed event encourages participants to partake in a two-hour (approximately) walk from Cates Park, starting at 9 a.m., along beach, roads and trails to the public dock at Deep Cove. To return, participants can take a free boat ride back until 1 p.m., or return by walking.
Those seeking fitness and fun with a charitable bent should Seek the Peak on Sunday starting at 8:15 a.m. Participants will challenge their fitness, stamina and mental toughness as they travel 13 kilometres starting from Ambleside Park in West Vancouver before commencing a 1,400-metre trek up the recently reopened Grouse Grind. Registration is still open, with funds raised earmarked for the BC Cancer Foundation’s fight against breast cancer.
Get yourself a fresh new summer haircut while supporting some people that really need it right now – what could be better? Lynn Valley Barbershop is hosting a Cut-A-Thon on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., with all proceeds going to support those affected by the devastating fire last week in Mountain Village that has left up to 14 families without a home.
