The Fish Counter is both a seafood restaurant and a fish market combined.

We are blessed to live in a place that boasts stunning natural beauty, with fabulous forests, magnificent mountains and a rugged yet captivating coastline. And while taking in these stunning splendours helps fill our hearts, we’re also very lucky that they can help fill our stomachs, as well.

After all, the West Coast is the best coast for many reasons, one of them being its fantastically fresh and deliciously delectable seafood!

At The Fish Counter in Edgemont Village, sustainability is the only option. With two established and immensely popular Vancouver locations – one on Main Street and the other on Commercial Drive – the seafood mini-chain has announced plans to open its third location on Vancouver’s North Shore.

To mark the occasion, it is hosting a can’t-miss celebration that’s fun, flavourful and only a little fishy (in the best possible way!).

Getting fresh on the North Shore

“We look forward to seeing everyone at our grand opening party on September 15th,” says Maxwell McMullin, manager of The Fish Counter in Edgemont Village, North Vancouver.

“We took over an old restaurant space and are just finishing renovations now. We’re near Delaney Coffee and across from the Chevron gas station.”

The Fish Counter is both a seafood restaurant and a fish market combined, where you can purchase the freshest fish from the showcase to take home and prepare yourself with expert tips from the staff or order delicious hot and cold meals from a menu at the counter to enjoy in the 30-seat space in its primo Edgemont Village location.

The market restaurant hybrid prides itself on serving 100% Ocean Wise-certified, sustainable fish and seafood in the 1,000-square-foot space.

“All of our fish in our retail display is wild-caught and local. We keep a small selection of retail options to ensure the highest quality in each product,” McMullin says.

An ocean of options

Customers can take home The Fish Counter’s signature sauces, halibut cakes, crab cakes, salmon, white fish and tuna, as well as shellfish items such as clams, mussels and caviar, which can be ordered in advance.

The menu features the brand’s famous Fish n’ Chips, which can be made with halibut, cod, snapper or salmon, with a satisfying selection of sides, including mushy peas (very British indeed), crisp Caesar salad and deep-fried scallop bites.

New guests are encouraged to try The Fish Counter’s bouillabaisse, a savoury seafood stew prepared beautifully with their saffron broth. If you’re in the mood for a heartier handheld, options include the Salmonito Wrap, Fish Tacos and Oyster Po’Boy Sandwich.

McMullin also claims their “dairy-free clam chowder is loved by lots of people with food sensitivities.”

Speaking of, gluten-free folks will appreciate that every menu item can be made GF, with The Fish Counter taking it a step further by using a separate gluten-free fryer to avoid cross-contamination risks.

Looking for a meal deal? Every Thursday and Sunday offers beer and Fish n’ Chips sold for a steal at $5 and $10, respectively.

Business hours are 11 a.m. - 8 p.m., covering lunch and dinner service, with a fully licensed bar serving B.C. beer and wine to add to the hyper-local offerings.

Live or work in Edgemont Village? Come join in the festivities on September 15 and watch for their neighbourhood block party on October 5  to celebrate the opening, as well.
