Another elderly resident at Lynn Valley Care Centre Lodge has died of coronavirus, becoming the seventh person at the North Vancouver care home to die of COVID-19.
Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.'s top medical health officer, announced the news at a press conference Thursday afternoon.
One other person – a man in his 80s - has died in the Fraser Health Region.
The death was announced as Henry said 40 more people in the province have tested positive for COVID-19 in B.C., bring the total number of cases in the province to 271. Of those, 152 are in the Vancouver Coast Health region, which includes the North Shore, as well as Richmond and Vancouver.
Henry said “a good number” of the cases are connected to the outbreaks at three long-term care homes, including the Lynn Valley Care Centre in North Vancouver and Hollyburn House in West Vancouver.
Seventeen people are currently in hospital with coronavirus, said Henry, including nine people who are in intensive care.
Henry has said seniors are still at the greatest risk from the virus and people over the age of 80 are most likely to have severe illness and die from the disease.
“People in our long-term care homes are very susceptible to this,” she said.
