Nathan Clement has successfully defended his title as the world’s fastest man on three wheels.

On Tuesday, the West Vancouver para cyclist erupted with emotion as he crossed the finish line, well ahead of the pack in the men’s T1 individual time trial event at the UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships in Zurich, Switzerland.

Clement finished the 11.3-kilometre track with a time of 18 minutes 48.16 seconds, a whopping one minute 25.03 seconds ahead of second-place Giorgio Farroni of France.

Clement’s average speed was more than 36 kilometres per hour.

It’s a repeat performance from last year’s World Championship, when the 29-year-old athlete claimed the title in Glasgow, U.K.

The para cyclist continues to light up the world stage, coming off a silver medal performance in the same event on Sept. 4 at the Paralympic Games in Paris, France.

On Friday, Clement will compete in the 31.8-km T1 road race. He placed ninth in that event at the Paralympics.

Clement suffers from a nervous system disorder called dystonia that causes muscles to contract uncontrollably, especially on the left side of his body.
