'We've been exceptionally dry': Vancouver forecast includes sunny streak, incoming rain

It's a dry January in Vancouver.

Vancouver weather will start off clear and dry for the beginning of this week.

It seems Vancouver has gotten in on the idea of a dry January.

The Metro Vancouver forecast shows very little rain for the rest of the month, which means one of the wettest times of the year in Raincouver won't be all that wet.

"It's not characteristic for this time of the year," says Environment Canada meteorologist Philippe-Alain Bergeron. "We've been exceptionally dry for Jan so far."

To Jan. 25, 2025, there's been about 32 mm of precipitation this month at Vancouver harbour's weather station, he explains.

Typically, January sees more than 236 mm, which means the city is more than 200 mm below normal.

Forecast for Vancouver

Don't worry; it doesn't look like Vancouver is going to get anywhere close to the usual by Jan. 31.

In fact, the sunny streak will remain in place for most of the week.

"Right now we just have this big ridge that's holding on," says Bergeron. "It should remain for the next few days into the midweek."

That means sunny days hitting 6 C, overnight lows of 0 C (inland it could drop to -3 C), some fog in the mornings, and blue skies from now, Jan. 26, to Wednesday, Jan. 29.

That ridge will falter, but Bergeron says it's unclear when.

"We're confident the ridge will break down and there'll be a significant pattern change toward the end of the week," explains Bergeron. "It's not clear if it's going to be early or late Thursday night into Friday."

On Friday, Jan 31, a more organized system is expected, with up to 30 mm of rain over the day, and temperatures around 5 C.

"At sea level it'll be a rain event; there may be a few wet snowflakes over the high terrain," Bergeron says.

Following the Friday system will be some dampness and then colder weather.

"We know it's trending colder and eventually drier," says Bergeron.

However, what the weather will be like by the weekend is still uncertain for now.
