Kids at Seymour Heights elementary are set to enjoy a brand new playground in their schoolyard later this year.
On Tuesday, the provincial government announced that North Vancouver was one of 25 school districts across B.C. to receive $200,000 for a new, accessible playground.
The initiative is part of the province’s commitment to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for all students, ensuring they have quality areas to play during school hours, according to a statement.
“This new, accessible playground at Seymour Heights is an investment in children’s health, imagination and future,” said Susie Chant, MLA for North Vancouver – Seymour.
“These are the kinds of projects that make a lasting impact on communities, and I can’t wait to see all kids enjoying it when it’s done,” she said.
Since 2018, the B.C. government has helped build new playgrounds at 307 schools. In North Van, those include Brooksbank, Lynnmour, Queen Mary Community, Westview, Larson and Norgate elementary schools.
Up to three potential playground projects are reviewed by the school district each year, with priority given to sites with the greatest need. Considerations include the age of the current playground equipment, student enrolment and accessibility needs of students, a school district spokesperson said.
The selected schools are then submitted to the provincial Ministry of Education and Childcare to apply for funding.
The new Seymour Heights playground is currently in the early stages of the design process, with a targeted completion date of fall 2025, the spokesperson said.
