A man who fell to his death near the Capilano Suspension Bridge on the weekend was apparently reaching for a dropped bankcard just before he lost his footing, according to police.

The 30-year-old victim, a tourist from St. Catharines, Ont., was preparing to take a photo near an outcrop at the east end of the bridge Saturday evening when what appears to be an ATM or credit card slipped from his pocket and landed on the other side of a safety barrier, according to investigators who have reviewed security footage of the incident.

The next thing you know, hes climbing over a railing, said Cpl. Richard De Jong, a spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP, describing the footage. As hes standing there, it looks like hes almost going to lean forward, and people are saying: No, no, no, this isnt a good idea. Then he slips away from the rocks.

The man plummeted 60 metres to the floor of the canyon, according to police.

Investigators have since identified the victim, but are not releasing the name at the request of his family. They say he was on vacation in the Lower Mainland with his extended family when the accident occurred.

The police investigation is now closed, said De Jong.

The coroners service will look into it, and see if there are any recommendations that need to be made, but at this point there dont appear to be any issues as far as safety (is) concerned, and definitely no criminal activity, he said. Its just a tragic, tragic accident.
