Squamish hereditary Chief and elected councillor Ian Campbell is considering a run to be Vancouver’s next mayor.

Campbell is contemplating seeking the nomination to run for mayor with Vision Vancouver, according to multiple media reports.

The party’s deadline for potential mayoral candidates to submit a nomination package was Friday.

Vision announced May 4 its plan to run a mayoral candidate. The party had earlier asked potential candidates interested in a mayoral bid to express interest to Vision.

Party co-chair Michael Haack said in a new release that the party was contacted by a variety of potential candidates interested in running for mayor, including several considering a run under the Vision Vancouver banner. One of those includes current Vision Coun. Raymond Louie.

Haack said the party’s board considered various options, including endorsing an independent candidate or a candidate from another party.

“However, with less than six months to the election, it is clear that none of the potential candidates has emerged as a consensus choice, and to date have not been able to secure cross-party support, which would be essential to the success of an independent campaign,” Haack said.

The party will hold its nomination meeting for the mayoral candidate on Sunday, June 24.

On Thursday, Burnaby MP Kennedy Stewart announced that he will run for mayor of Vancouver as an independent. Another independent candidate, Shauna Sylvester, announced her bid for mayor last month.

Green Party Coun. Adriane Carr, who has led recent opinion polls as the favourite to become the city’s next mayor, is also still mulling a run for city hall’s top job.

Earlier this week, the Non-Partisan Association announced it has chosen Glen Chernen, John Coupar and Ken Sim as the three potential mayoral candidates, rejecting the applications of Coun. Hector Bremner and George Steeves.

Campbell was not immediately available to comment for this story.
