There was no bomb scare on Quarry Rock, but a suspicious object was removed by police from a property in Deep Cove on Monday afternoon.
The RCMP’s explosives disposal unit arrived on the scene in the 2400 block of Caledonia Avenue around 1:30 p.m. and cordoned off the area for a couple hours.
“One of the homeowners there unearthed what was thought to be a suspicious … we didn’t know if maybe we were dealing with a military ordnance or what is was,” said Sgt. Michael Arbulic of the North Vancouver RCMP.
While it caused quite the stir in the normally quiet neighbourhood, police had yet to identify the object, measuring 14 inches long by four inches wide, by late Monday afternoon.
“No idea. It’s so old and so rusty that … it could be a canister or a military type of (ordnance) but it’s so corroded that there’s no markings. We have no idea – it’s that old,” said Arbulic. “It could be a two-litre bottle covered in rust.”
The ambiguous object was properly disposed of by the explosives squad after they left the scene around 3:30 p.m.
“Nine times out of 10 it gets blown up, regardless of what it was,” said Arbulic.
A false social media report stated there was a possible bomb threat on the popular Quarry Rock hiking trail.
