North Vancouver RCMP are asking for witnesses to come forward after a driver struck and seriously injured a cyclist, Tuesday evening.

The collision happened on West First Street near Mackay Road just before 6 p.m. Police say the driver of a grey Pontiac Pursuit was pulling out of the Econo Mini Storage parking lot on the south side of the street when they hit the cyclist.

Bystanders came to the man’s aid and B.C. Ambulance Service Paramedic took the man to the hospital.

“[The injuries] are serious enough that they’re still in the hospital,” said Const. Mansoor Sahak, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman, on Wednesday morning.

There is a painted bike lane that runs along that segment of West First.

Sahak said it is too soon to say whether the driver will face enforcement as investigators are still trying to determine exactly what happened. Impaired driving has been ruled out.

Investigators are now hoping to speak with several of the good Samaritans who came to help but left before they could give statements to the RCMP. Sahak said there may be drivers with dashcams that hold evidence.

“We have to determine what happened, who was in the right of way,” Sahak said. “Providing dashcam and speaking those witnesses will help us determine who’s at fault and if there could be any enforcement action taken.”

Anyone who witnessed or has dash cam video of the collision and has not spoken to police is asked to contact the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311 and quote file 24-12966.
