North Vancouver RCMP are looking for witnesses and footage from the public that might explain what happened in the moments leading up to a crash on Highway 1 that left a pedestrian in hospital.

The incident happened after 11:45 p.m. on Saturday night when the driver of a white sedan struck a woman who was trying to cross the highway on foot, just south of the Fern Street overpass.

“The driver did stop, rendered aid, and called the police,” said Const. Mansoor Sahak, North Vancouver RCMP spokesperson.

Speed and alcohol are not considered to be factors in the collision. The driver told police the victim was wearing dark clothing.

As of Monday, the victim was still in serious condition and Sahak did not know if investigators had been able to get a statement from her.

In the meantime, investigators are appealing for anyone who was in the area around the time of the crash – 11:30 p.m until midnight – who may have seen something or captured dashcam footage, to contact police “to paint a better picture as to what happened prior to the collision or during the collision,” Sahak said.

It’s too early to say whether the driver may face enforcement of any kind, Sahak said, but it is not ever safe or legal to cross the highway on foot, he noted.

“We’re not quite sure as to what was in this person’s mind when they decided to walk across the highway, but that’s what our investigation is going to be centred around,” he said. “It is against the Transportation Act to walk on the highway. It’s dangerous and certainly not what we advise for anybody.”
