North Vancouver RCMP are hoping the public can help them find a suspect accused of assaulting a woman in a mobility scooter during an attempted robbery.
The mugging took place at about 2:50 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, outside a pharmacy on the 1200 block of Marine Drive.
According to police, the victim was stopped outside the business when an unidentified man attempted to steal items out of her handbag, which was hanging from her mobility scooter.
“An altercation ensued and the victim and a bystander that intervened were subsequently assaulted by the suspect,” a release from the RCMP stated.
One of the victims was taken to Lions Gate Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
The suspect also claimed he had a gun, although at no point in the interaction was one seen. He was last seen going east on Marine Drive.
“This was an extremely frightening incident for the two victims involved and we’re thankful things didn’t escalate further,” said Const. Mansoor Sahak, North Vancouver RCMP spokesperson.
On Monday, investigators released a surveillance image of the suspect in hopes it might lead to tips from the public.
Police describe the suspect as an "Indigenous male wearing a dark backpack, black baseball cap, beige shorts, black high-top sneakers and a grey long-sleeve hoodie."
Anyone who witnessed or has video of the incident and has not spoken to police is asked to contact the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311 and quote file 24-18369.
