North Vancouver City Fire Department crews quickly doused a Lower Lonsdale apartment fire on Monday, stopping it from spreading to other suites in the building.

Around 10:20 a.m., members of both North Vancouver fire departments were called to a fifth-floor apartment at one of the Twin Towers buildings on St. Georges Avenue at Third Street.

“We were able to get to the fire really quickly, knock it down and contain the fire to the suite of origin,” said Fire Chief Greg Schalk. “We were also helping residents come down a separate stairwell as well. There were no injuries reported from any of the residents or firefighters.”

Schalk said the suite where the fire was burning was left uninhabitable and the resident who lived there is receiving emergency support services from North Shore Emergency Management.

Some of the other suites below likely suffered some water damage, Schalk said, but the fire was caught quickly enough that most residents in the building will be back in their suites with little to no disruption.

The Twin Towers buildings provide affordable housing for seniors.

Schalk said fire investigators remained on the scene Monday afternoon and that there was no word yet on its cause or origin.

“We’re fairly confident to say that it’s not suspicious,” he said.

And, he added, the incident underscores the importance of being prepared for fires in the home.

“We really encourage people to ensure they have working smoke alarms and fire extinguishers on hand to help, if needed,” he said.
