Meet your local court system

Saturday is a great day to put down the detective novel, turn off Law and Order, and head down to North Vancouvers provincial courthouse to see how the Canadian justice system really works.

Law Day 2012 is an open house event organized by the North Shore Family Court and Youth Justice Committee. The goal is to give adults and young people a chance to watch law enforcement professionals at work, all the way from investigating a crime scene to making an arrest and pursuing a prosecution. The presentations will also cover some less publicized processes, including restorative justice, First Nations court, family court, youth court, civil court and volunteer community support groups. Various police vehicles and equipment, and a B.C. Correctional Service dog handler will also be on hand.

West Vancouver police and the North Vancouver RCMP will team up to simulate an adult offence at 10 a.m., and a youth offence at 1 p.m.

The general public is warmly invited to what is billed as information, education and fun for the whole family, commented Cpl. Richard De Jong, spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP, in a release.

Law Day runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., April 14, at the North Vancouver provincial courthouse, 200 East 23rd St., North Vancouver.
