POLICE say thieves targeted the mailboxes of several West Vancouver buildings over the Easter long weekend.

Mail was stolen from an apartment building on Saturday, April 7, according to the West Vancouver police department. There was no damage to the building's door or mailboxes.

Theft was more obvious at a bank of mailboxes on the 5800block of Marine Drive, where three boxes were pried open at some point during the evening or April 8 or early in the following morning. The owners face $500 in repairs.

Also on April 8, a thief gained access to the lobby of a building on the 1100-block of 25th Street and forced open 10 mailboxes.

On April 11, the mailboxes on Marine Drive were struck again. A police officer conducting an early morning patrol noticed just before 2 a.m. that two boxes had been tampered with.

West Vancouver police would like to speak with anyone else who may have had their mailbox broken into, and they remind residents that they should not buzz anyone into their building that they don't know.

Mail theft is also a common precursor to identity theft.
