The Lions Gate Bridge was closed to traffic for more than an hour during the Wednesday morning commute as West Vancouver police dealt with a distraught man on the north tower of the bridge.
Police closed the bridge just before 8 a.m., diverting drivers to the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing, which quickly backed up as far as Taylor Way. TransLink was forced to delay or detour seven of its bus routes that use the Lions Gate, resulting in crowds at the SeaBus station.
By 9:20 a.m., the situation was safely resolved.
“We responded to an investigation under the Mental Health Act that required closure of the bridge…The impetus was for a personal crisis,” said Const. Jeff Palmer, West Vancouver police spokesman. “The person has been safely apprehended to be taken for assessment.”
