North Vancouver’s Grouse Mountain Resort is launching an art gallery contest to celebrate the opening of its new gondola this winter.

Six artists will see their work wrapped around a gondola cabin. To launch the contest, Grouse Mountain Resort has teamed up with Vancouver-based artist and illustrator Carson Ting, who will be creating his own work to be part of the gallery, according to a Grouse Mountain press release.

“Being able to see my artwork wrapped on a gondola cabin is going to be so special, especially when my kids see it for the first time knowing they were a huge inspiration for the piece, it’s going to be something we remember forever,” Ting said in the press release.

The winners will have their artwork featured on the cabin for up to one month, as well as receive a cash prize of $2,000 and two tickets to the Grouse Mountain VIP gondola launch party.

Ting owns and runs his own art and design studio, Chairman Ting, based in Vancouver since 2012. He started his career in Toronto after graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD), and specializes in creative advertising. He has worked with brands such as Nike, Starbucks, The Cartoon Network and more.

Grouse Mountain is a special place for Ting, holding many memories with his family.

“We’ve shared some amazing days together at Grouse Mountain seeing the bears, playing in the Kids Tree Canopy, eating poutine in the chalet, and I want to highlight all of it in my art piece,” Ting said.

Memories of a lifetime is the theme of the contest, in which Ting will also be a judge.

“As a judge, I’m really excited to see how other artists perceive different aspects of the mountain, and how they will interpret that visually,” Ting said, adding he will be looking for several main aspects, including the concept, authenticity, uniqueness and “the craft” of the artwork.

The new gondola will feature 14 towers and 27 eight-passenger cabins, according to the press release. The gondola will carry up to 1,000 people per hour, with one trip lasting five and a half minutes.

“We’re so excited to be able to share this huge milestone with our community and to be able to highlight and platform up-and-coming artists with this contest,” said Grouse Mountain Resort communications manager Madelaine Twomey.

The resort has been planning the $35 million new gondola since 2021, including 10,000 square feet of commercial space and more parking at the base.

The new gondola will operate along the Red Super Skyride, which will help increase ingress, capacity and flow of the resort, the press release said.

People can submit their work for the Grouse Gallery Art Contest by Oct. 18 before midnight. Winners will be contacted by Nov. 4.
