B.C. just launched a $1,000 emergency benefit for workers: Here's how you apply

Tri-City residents struggling under the financial weight of the COVID-19 pandemic are in for a bit more relief as the province opens up applications to a $1,000 emergency benefit for workers. 

Rolled out as the Emergency Benefit for Workers (BCEBW), the one-time, tax-free payment is available to all British Columbians, provided they have already been approved for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). Note, you do not have to have received a payment yet.

In addition, you must: 

  • have been a resident of B.C. on March 15, 2020;

  • be at least 15 years old on the date of application;

  • have filed, or agree to file, a 2019 B.C. income tax return; and

  • not be receiving provincial income assistance or disability assistance.

To apply, have your social insurance number and direct deposit information information ready and go to www.gov.bc.ca/workerbenefit

On Monday, May 4, 2020, agents will be available by phone to assist people who need help applying, including those who do not have internet access, according to a written statement from the B.C. government.
