BC Hydro crews have been busy in North Vancouver restoring power lost following a significant windstorm.
The morning of Sunday, Jan. 2 BC Hydro was made aware of an outage affecting 1,700 customers in North Vancouver. That outage no longer appears on the power provider's outages list. Now outages appear to be located mainly in West Vancouver with a series of smaller outages affecting approximately 80 BC Hydro customers.
Crews are dealing with outages in West Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast, and Vancouver Island according to a video BC Hydro posted to Twitter. The number of outages is due to both wind and snow which can complicate repair work by limiting crews' access to certain areas a spokesperson said. The wind and snow combination also can take down branches and power lines.
In North Vancouver, a large tree has taken down a transmission pole and power lines.
The strong winds, ranging from 70 to 90 km/h, are forecasted to last into the night according to earlier warnings from Environment Canada. As well, another dump of an estimated 5-15 cm of snow is expected to fall in higher elevations like or the North Shore including West Vancouver.
