Time Traveller: Grouse Mountain's Skyride has been providing gorgeous views since 1966

The first Skyride launched on Jan. 29, 1966, carrying up to 50 passengers up the North Vancouver mountain

On Jan. 29, 1966, Grouse Mountain Resorts Ltd. opened their new aerial tram, known as the Skyride.

The 50-passenger system, ordered from Austria, was the idea of Andrew Saxton Sr., who had purchased the mountain from the Cromie family in 1964 and wanted to install a new method of bringing visitors to the top.

At the time, it was the largest double reversal passenger-carrying tramway in Canada, travelling roughly one mile in just five minutes. The tram was replaced a decade later by the 100-passenger “Super Skyride,” or the Red Skyride.
