The Hastings Shingle Mill Manufacturing Company operated a sawmill and logged most of the area of Lynn Valley in the early 1900s. The mill was in operation 24 hours a day.

Settlers would saw timber at night, while in the day shingle bolts were transported by the flume from Rice Lake. Shingle bolts filled the lake to the brim and the water would drift them down to Burrard Inlet.

Walter Horatio Davison oversaw the timing of all the bolts that left the lake, and many flume foremen made sure each bolt made it to tidewater in one piece.
