Five students from Hollyburn Elementary were recently selected as regional finalists for a contest organized by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
The contest, called Imagine a Canada, is a national arts and communications initiative for which participating students submitted a story, poem, piece of art, short film, or essay based on their thoughts about what the future of Canada will look like through the lens of reconciliation.
Hollyburn teacher Ryan Loewen led the project at the school and five students were among top 10 entries chosen in B.C. in each age group.
Those students are Sam Talaifar, Ali Aryaeinia, and Aryan Mosavian Pour for a group rap (grades 7-9) category; Leila Cavers in the poem/drawing (grades 4-6) category; and Andra Pope in the poem/drawing (grades 7-9) category.
The students were honoured at a special ceremony at the Musqueam Cultural Centre in Vancouver on May 30.
In addition, Andra Pope was selected as one of the B.C. representatives who will be travelling to Ottawa this summer for a ceremony with Gov.-Gen. David Johnston in a ceremony at Rideau Hall.
