The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival is kicking off tonight at North Vancouver’s Centennial Theatre (2300 Lonsdale Ave.) at 7:30 p.m. The festival, a celebration of mountain film, sports and culture, will get things started with a presentation by renowned climber and visual storyteller Cory Richards, in addition to a number of films. Ballet 101 is being offered at West Vancouver Memorial Library (1950 Marine Dr.) Sunday, Feb. 11 from 11 a.m. to noon and at West Vancouver Community Centre (2121 Marine Dr.) Monday, Feb. 12 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The free event is being offered to provide kids and adults alike with the opportunity to learn about ballet as a storytelling medium through basic positions, conveying emotion through movement, and rudimentary dance steps. Check out 19th Birthday Party, a new media art installation at Cityscape Community Art Space (335 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver), that opens Friday, Feb. 9. The exhibition was produced in partnership with Housing Matters Media Project in order to explore issues relating to youth transitioning out of government care at the age of 19 and youth homelessness. In addition, Handsworth Secondary students created original birthday cards using mono printing, paper cutting and Photoshop that will be displayed in the gallery, with prints available for the public to write best-wishes to youth in the foster care system.
