West Van basks in Thanksgiving sun, breaking temperature records over weekend

West Vancouver hit 25 degrees on Saturday

It’s a trend that might catch on given the balmy summer temperatures over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Three temperature records were broken in West Vancouver over the weekend.

On Saturday, thermometers reached a summer-like high of 25 degrees, surpassing last year’s warm-weather record of 24 degrees. Sunday was similarly spectacular on the temperature scale, with the West Vancouver weather station hitting 23.3 degrees – just slightly higher than last year’s record of 22.1 degrees. The overnight low on Saturday was also the warmest recorded in West Vancouver for that date – dipping down to only 15.1 degrees.

The balmy fall temperatures in West Vancouver were among several records set this Thanksgiving weekend across a “wide swath of the province,” said Ken Dosanjh, meteorologist for Environment Canada.

So far, October 2023 has followed in the footsteps of October 2022 as being unusually warm.

Last year, “It was a warmer than seasonable October for the entire province,” said Dosanjh, with average temperatures 1.7 degrees higher than usual. This month has also started off warmer than usual.

This week, Thursday and Friday are expected to be the warmest and driest days of the week, with temperatures expected to reach 20 degrees at Capilano University and 19 degrees in Lower Lonsdale, according to Weatherhood, before the fall rains resume on Sunday.
