Patrick Weiler: addressing the climate crisis, economic recovery and housing affordability

The Liberal candidate presents an action plan for handling the top social and economic issues

The climate crisis. A strong recovery. Affordability. Reconciliation.

That’s what I’m hearing about in our community, so I’m running for re-election as your Liberal candidate for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country to tackle these issues.

I’m an environmental lawyer, born and raised in West Vancouver. I joined the Liberals because they’re the only party that can and will meet these challenges.

Here’s our plan:

The climate crisis

We have a comprehensive, costed plan to fight the climate crisis. We’re on track to exceed our original Paris targets—so we’ve increased them. It will create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and it’s been endorsed by Canada’s contributing authors on the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, including former BC Green Party leader Andrew Weaver.

The Conservatives, meanwhile, have promised to revive the Northern Gateway Pipeline, and to violate the Paris Accord by taking the unprecedented step of decreasing Canada’s targets.

A strong recovery

Our economy is coming back, with more people employed in B.C. than before the pandemic, but there’s still work to do. Our agreement to bring $10/day childcare to B.C. will help more parents—especially moms—stay in the workforce, and our commitment to fund provincial proof-of-vaccination programs will keep our economy open for good.

Affordability

I talk to young people every day who can’t afford to live in West Vancouver, where they grew up. We will meet this challenge with a proportionate response by building, repairing or restoring 1.4 million new homes across Canada, introducing a tax-free First Home Savings Account for young Canadians, taxing property-flipping, and more. Generation Squeeze, a Vancouver-based affordability advocacy organization, has endorsed our plan.

Reconciliation

As a lawyer who has practiced aboriginal law and represented First Nations across our province, I’m fully committed to reconciliation. We’ve done a lot in the past six years:

  • helped lift every long-term drinking water advisory on reserve in B.C.;
  • completed or made progress on 80% of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action under federal jurisdiction;
  • incorporated the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples into federal law.

There’s more to do, and I will continue to build relationships to advance meaningful reconciliation in our communities.

The choice in this election is clear. We can move backwards on the climate, the economy, affordability and reconciliation with the Conservatives, or we can move forward—for everyone.

I hope I can earn your vote.
