From free classical music concerts to an inspiring conversation with a Canadian spaceman, the upcoming calendar of events at the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Arts at Capilano University (BlueShore at CapU) features an eclectic collection of shows that are bound to entertain and delight everyone in North Vancouver!

BlueShore at CapU's Fall/Winter 2024 line-up will commence on Oct. 10 with a concert by indie singer-songwriter Nano Stern, who will perform his powerful Chilean folk-rock music. On stage, Stern blends Spanish and electric guitars, piano, violin and Andean and Nordic flutes into his music, while singing in Spanish and telling stories in English to give context to his songs. Folk music legend Joan Baez calls Stern “the best young Chilean songwriter of his generation."

From Oct. 18-19 at the Kay Meek Arts Centre, the BlueShore at CapU presents After the Gold Rush Reimagined, a Neil Young extravaganza celebrating the legendary third album of the iconic Canadian and American singer-songwriter. The ensemble will be led by Steve Dawson and feature artists such as Krystle Dos Santos, Sue Foley, Joe Henry, Rich Hope, Marcus Mosely, Samantha Parton, Marin Patenaude, Steve Poltz and Julian Taylor.

Jenny Scheinman’s All Species Parade will take over the BlueShore at CapU stage on Oct. 21. California-based jazz violinist Scheinman is a long-time collaborator of Bill Frisell, having played on nine of the American jazz guitarist’s albums. She will lead her own ace band (including Frisell and instrumentals such as Kenny Wollesen, Carmen Staaf and Tony Scherr) in an astonishing musical performance of her latest album inspired by the Pacific Northwest.

On Oct. 25, Canadian-born American jazz saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk will lead both small and large CapU Jazz ensembles in a memorable repertoire featuring Antoniuk’s original music and inspiring pieces by other jazz composers.

For appreciators of classical music, Cap Classics will present two free lunch-time shows at the BlueShore at Cap U, starting with soprano singer Rachel Suzanne, who will perform her Witching Hour program on Oct. 4, and followed by Kitchen Sink Pocket Orchestra on Oct. 25. On Nov. 29-30, the theatre will host evening classical music concerts featuring CapU’s Instrumental Ensemble and CapU Choirs.

Just in time for the holiday season, Juno award-winning vocalist, pianist and songwriter Laila Biali will bring her Winter Songs and Holiday Classics tour to the BlueShore at CapU on Dec. 5. The line-up stars Biali alongside fellow Juno-winning saxophonist and flautist Jane Bunnett, bassist Dan Fortin, violinist Rebekah Wolkstein, Eskasoni Mi’kmaq First Nations dancer Sarah Prosper and CapU’s Nite Cap choir.

Former foreign affairs minister and the first Canadian to go into space Marc Garneau will take audiences on A Most Extraordinary Ride (also the title of Garneau’s upcoming memoir, to be released on Oct. 8) during his talk on the BlueShore at CapU stage on Nov. 18.

Finally, theatre fans can take in two dynamic plays presented by the CapU Theatre Department this November. The timeless and tragic Shakespearean love story Romeo and Juliet, directed by Bob Frazer, will run in repertory with a stunning new adaptation by Nicholas Harrison of Charles Dickens’ holiday classic A Christmas Carol from Nov. 14 to Nov. 23.
