Vancouver, a city well known for its massive port, will see shipping containers used for something else this summer downtown.
Junction Public Market opens June 28. It's a shopping centre made out of giant shipping containers located in the city's core and in a busy zone that draws lots of tourists.
Junction will be set up between Waterfront Station and Canada Place until Sept. 29, just as Vancouver's cruise ship season winds down. The market's hours will be Tuesday to Sunday and holiday Mondays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
"We can see shipping containers being offloaded next door, which is echoed by our design motif," says market co-founder Patrick Carnegie. "We’re in the heart of downtown, with commuters hustling to Waterfront Station and visitors disembarking from the cruise ships."
He notes organizers want to create a piazza-like destination for the city.
The market will host a variety of food vendors and local makers, including ice cream maker Seaside Ice Box, Mr. Pretzel and Spanish Cravings. Central City Brewing and Distilling will be on hand as well as Ward's Cider, along with wineries Stag's Hollow and JoieFarm.
"The bar may have extended summer hours on Friday and Saturday nights to enjoy sunsets and live entertainment overlooking the harbour," reads a press release.
Along with the food and merchant areas, there will also be live entertainment weekly; a list on their site will be uploaded soon.
Stackt, a similar market in Toronto, has announced a pop-up location will be coming to Vancouver "later this year" according to its website, but has not announced a location or dates.
