A slim majority of North Vancouver and West Vancouver residents appear eager to host FIFA's 2026 World Cup.

Vancouver is among the cities in the running to host 2026 FIFA World Cup games.

But how eager are North Shore residents to welcome the "beautiful game" to the region?

North Shore News polled 2,216 readers and asked the question: Would you like Vancouver to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

The poll ran from April 14 to April 28 on our website. Of the 2,216 votes, we can determine that 910 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

Yes, it would be fun and good for the economy. 54.95% local, 50.27% total
No, it would be a big, expensive headache. 29.23% local, 33.66% total
Maybe after we solve more pressing local issues. 15.82% local, 16.06% total

Evidently, we are more eager to see World Cup soccer in Metro Vancouver than we are another Olympics. When the North Shore News polled readers' opinions of potentially hosting the 2030 Winter Games, only 33 per cent of poll respondents supported the idea while 47 per cent said it would be more trouble than it's worth.

The province is supporting Vancouver's bid to host World Cup games, citing a need to boost tourism.

Results are based on an online study of adult North Shore News readers who are located in North Vancouver and West Vancouver. The margin of error – which measures sample variability – is +/- 2.07%, 19 times out of 20.
