North Shore residents oppose pay parking in parks: poll

Once you've given something away for free, good luck getting people to want to pay for it.

Lynn Canyon Park has it already. Lynn Headwaters has it in the summer. Lighthouse Park might have it soon. Increasingly, municipalities are installing parking meters in popular parks to help cover the cost of maintenance and discourage people from driving when they could walk or take transit.

But how do North Shore residents feel about paying to park where they recreate?

North Shore News polled 1,531 readers and asked the question: How do you feel about pay parking at North Shore destination parks?

The poll ran from March 31 to April 14. Of the 1,531 votes, we can determine that 621 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

It's good. It will raise money for parks maintenance and encourage less driving. 17.87% local, 19.53% total
I'm OK with it as long as local residents are exempt. 33.82% local, 30.31% total
It's bad. Parks maintenance should be paid for with taxes. 48.15% local, 50.16% total

District of West Vancouver council will be voting later this year on a plan to introduce pay parking at Lighthouse Park, Whytecliff Park and Nelson Canyon Park/Whyte Lake Trail, although it's unlikely to be implemented.

Results are based on an online study of adult North Shore News readers that are located in North Vancouver and West Vancouver. The margin of error – which measures sample variability – is +/- 2.49%, 19 times out of 20.
