Lifeguard cuts dangerous

Dear Editor:

With the recent hot weather and tragic news of swimming deaths, I would like to emphasize that North Vancouver beaches no longer have lifeguards (Lifeguards Cut at Two North Van Parks, May 23, North Shore News). Why? On May 23, the North Vancouver Recreation Commission announced they were no longer necessary, that the lifeguards only supplied "band aids," and that their termination could save $35,000

My family uses North Vancouver beaches regularly and has always found the lifeguards vigilant and well trained. Their constant patrolling must have saved many lives.

I notice that North Van Rec emphasizes "community well being." Does this action ensure that?
