Letter: The District of North Vancouver shouldn’t have let our sign rot

District staff were emailed many times, asking for basic maintenance

The District of North Vancouver has removed the Delbrook sign after it fell into disrepair.

Dear Editor:

As a 37-year resident of the Delbrook community, I am deeply saddened to see the recent removal of the iconic Delbrook sign that welcomes people to our beautiful neighbourhood. I understand from the District of North Vancouver that the sign has been removed for safety concerns.

Over the past few years, this beautiful sign has been repeatedly covered with graffiti, the plywood structure has degraded and blackberry bushes from district property have encroached and covered the sign.

I have emailed the district countless times over the years about the gradual decline of this sign, requesting that it receive routine maintenance to ensure its longevity. I have never received a response from the district and sadly, but perhaps not surprisingly, the sign appears to have never received any care or attention.

Stewardship is a quality sorely lacking at the district level and we are the poorer because of it. This is an example, yet again, of the district being reactive rather than proactive.
