One-hundred pieces of litter each to pick up - that was the goal of two boys from North Star Montessori for Earth Day yesterday. They easily achieved that. Their normal playtime after school was spent on a hunt for discarded items from the side street and the park near their school.
They found everything from plastic bags, to plastic straws and plastic stir sticks, to glass, coffee cups, cardboard, candy wrappers and paper.
They were amazed that people would not care enough about the Earth and the environment to just discard items where they sat or walked.
However, what astonished them most was all the cigarette butts they found. They spoke to one young man who was smoking and he showed them the small pouch that he uses for his own cigarette butts that he said was free to pick up anytime from the City of North Vancouver.
It is important to recognize Earth Day and the effect it will have on our children and grandchildren if there are not some major changes in the way we care for our planet.
