LETTER: Drivers need to let pedestrians cross safely

Dear Editor:

As a pedestrian, I am writing in hopes the police read this and start enforcing (penalties for) driving without due caution.

I have often had drivers driving around me at intersections even if the sign says Walk. Sometimes, they don’t even bother to slow down, and whiz right in front of me or behind me. What if I fell or dropped something and stopped to pick it up, or changed my mind mid-course and turned around?

Drivers need to stop the car and allow pedestrians to cross the road safely.

I have been grazed by cars and honked at to hurry up because they don’t think I should be crossing and slowing them down.

What is five seconds of your day to ensure everyone gets where they are going safely without injury?

I have been almost run over numerous times walking on the sidewalk as drivers pull out onto the road, as they are looking the other way when they put the foot on the accelerator, looking for (oncoming) cars but not for pedestrians on the sidewalk they are crossing.
