LETTER: Canadians on the hook for our national debt

Dear Editor:

Am I missing something? Our Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, is claiming the Conservative party is better able to handle the Canadian economy than are any of his political rivals.

He is renowned for ducking questions and likes to use the phrase “the fact of the matter is...” so, then, let us look at the facts.

During the last nine years of the Liberal government (Chretien/Martin) the accumulated federal debt was reduced by $59.5 billion.

By comparison, during the nine years of Harper’s regime, the accumulated federal debt increased by $121.7 billion to a whopping total of $616.4 billion. Check it out at debtclock.ca.

In case you are wondering how this massive federal debt affects you personally, every man, woman and child in Canada is on the hook for $17,264.70 and climbing, in order to pay it off and, make no mistake about it, it will have to be repaid, eventually.

So now which political party do you think is better able to handle the Canadian economy? It’s a no-brainer!
