Dear Editor:
I am writing in response to your May 23 story, Lifeguards Cut at 2 North Van Parks.
I witnessed a life-saving action by the lifeguards on duty during one of the municipal-sponsored "music in the park" performances last summer. A teenager had swum out to the float and was 25 metres from the float swimming back to shore when he started panicking and was clearly having difficulty keeping his head above water. Some of his friends jumped in and swam towards him but the lifeguards on duty were very quick with their small boat and in my opinion, saved the young man from drowning.
This act alone surely must justify some sort of safety system to cover the ever increasing number of inexperienced swimmers now visiting our local beaches.
Lets hope no one has to pay the ultimate price for this "budget cut."
