Dear Editor:

On Oct. 27, a terrible accident took place at Vancouver International Airport. People were burned and maimed and the captain died from his wounds. My heart goes out to his family and the injured passengers.

As a retired pilot - air force, bush and airline - I have mulled this tragic catastrophe over again and again and each time I end up with the same question.

Apparently it all started with an oil pressure warning light coming on in flight and the crew decided to return to Vancouver. Accordingly, they reversed course, informed air traffic control of the problem and eventually started their descent.

The weather was fine and according to the last radio transmission both engines were running and everything was under control. At no time was any kind of an emergency mentioned.

On final approach, for some incomprehensible reason, the aircraft descended so far below the normal approach angle that it struck a lamp post almost a thousand feet from the end of the runway, causing the accident.

My question is this. What was the situation in the cockpit at the time? I trust the accident investigation board will be able to find out and let us know.

Truly a great tragedy.
