It is a tradition at the North Shore News that in the last edition prior to an election, we publish an editorial encouraging everyone to take some time to get informed, grab a chum or family member and then go vote on Election Day.
We’re not going to do that this time. We’re doing it a week early. Advance voting begins on Friday and runs until Monday. If you’ve already made up your mind about who gets your vote, go lock it in now. If you’re still undecided, we are pleased to bring you our always-popular candidate questionnaires for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country, North Vancouver-Capilano and Burnaby North-Seymour.
What’s the big hurry? This time around, there’s more on the line than who gets to govern Canada for the next four years. Every Nov. 11, when we gather around a cenotaph, we are reminded of the many thousands who served and sacrificed so we could keep our right to choose our leaders through free and fair elections.
If U.S. President Donald Trump has his way, this will be the last time Canadians have that right.
This year, more than being your civic responsibility, voting is an act of patriotism – regardless of who you cast your ballot for. We can think of no better signal to the world that we are the true north, strong and free, than a high voter turnout.
Before the long weekend is over, don your best denim and flannel, take a shot of maple syrup and march into that polling station like it’s a Tragically Hip concert. Show us that true, patriot love.
