Prime Minster Mark Carney is wasting no time in testing whether he has a mandate to lead not just the Liberal Party but also the country. We will go to the polls for an early federal election on April 28.
The election comes at strange time in our country’s history, with U.S. President Donald Trump attempting to cast doubt on whether it is indeed our country.
It also comes following a wild swing in the polls. If the election had been called at virtually any time between the fall of 2022 and winter of 2024, the polls indicated the Conservatives would steamroll to an easy majority government. The latest ones indicate the Liberals may not only hold onto power, but possibly even attain a majority.
But don’t get too hung up on that. People have a way of reading polls like a Rorschach Test, seeing in them what they want to see. It’s going to be a nail-biter in any event, and a five-week campaign provides a lot of time for opinions to change.
The only poll that really matters is the one that’s inside your own conscience. Now begins the civic responsibility to take some time away from other pursuits and dedicate it to getting yourself informed. To assist, we will be providing issues-based coverage and putting questions to our candidates in the weeks ahead.
On April 28, or at any of the advance polling days leading up to it, we want everyone to cast a vote that will make them proud for the next four years.
Regardless of who gets your X for, if we want to show we are indeed the true north, strong and free, there’s no better place to do it than in a ballot box.
