Whether it’s conjuring up an image on demand or summarizing a lengthy report, AI gets a lot of attention and praise these days.

You’d be forgiven if you were thinking that it was only a matter of time before news organizations like ours started using AI-generated content.

But we’re not. We are keeping it real.

With our methodical research, ethics and accountability standards, our journalism helps draw the urgently needed line between fantasy and reality. AI, by contrast, gained fame for producing images of people who, for some reason, had six fingers on each hand.

You can rest assured the words you are reading here were written by a real, live person – a person who earns a salary, raises a family, and is capable of critical thinking and understanding the breadth and nuances of the human condition in ways that an algorithm never will.

This week mark’s National Newspaper Week in Canada and we want you to know there are things you can do to support the newspaper that supports your community in the era of AI.
