Dear Editor:

I am disgusted about the cuts to the arts at Capilano University and, in particular, that this is viewed as a satisfactory solution to inadequate government funding. This, at a time of growth in the arts on the North Shore, e.g. the Gordon Smith Gallery, the Centre for Art, Architecture and Design envisioned and approved in West Vancouver and the new home for Presentation House Gallery in North Vancouver.

This decision to chop at the arts programs seems to be an expedited effort to balance a budget, and it seems there was no creative consideration given to a new vision of the university, to rebrand or re-invent. How short sighted! Perhaps every student at Capilano University should be required to take one elective course in the arts.

The community at large deserves some creative thought applied to the philosophical vision of this university. We need to ensure we adequately serve our future generations with more arts education, rather than less.
