A Toronto woman arrested in the death of her four-month-old baby is now facing a charge of second-degree murder.

Toronto police say the charge was upgraded from failing to provide the necessities of life after an autopsy of the infant.

Officers found the baby boy at a residential building in Toronto's midtown last week after his father reported him missing.

Police say the baby was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead.

His 30-year-old mother was scheduled to appear in court this morning on the murder charge.

The Toronto police homicide unit has taken over the investigation.
