One dead, two injured in Fort Providence, N.W.T., shooting

FORT PROVIDENCE, N.W.T. — Police say one person is dead after a shooting in the Northwest Territories hamlet of Fort Providence, about 315 kilometres southwest of Yellowknife.

RCMP say officers who responded to the report of a shooting at a home at about 12:45 a.m. found the victim dead at the scene.

A statement from the Mounties says two other people who sustained injuries were taken to the health centre for treatment.

RCMP say they have not made any arrests.

They say the shooting is believed to have been isolated and does not pose a risk to the public.

The major crime unit for the territory will be investigating the shooting along with the Office of the Chief Coroner.

Fort Providence had a population of 618 in the 2021 census.
