The District of North Vancouver is getting a sizeable chunk of change to help make Lynn Valley Road safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
The province has kicked in $500,000 towards the Lynn Valley Road Active Transportation project, which will eventually see almost an extra kilometre of sidewalk and 1.4 km of bike lanes installed between Mountain Highway and Dempsey Road.
The design and implementation of the project haven’t gone for public consultation yet but Mayor Mike Little welcomed the influx of funding.
“Traffic congestion is the number 1 issue facing our community. The added pedestrian and cycling options will help congestion issues by providing more ways to move around our community and creating better connections between neighbourhoods and parks for our residents,” he said in a press release from the province.
The total cost of the project is expected to be $1.32 million.
North Vancouver-Lonsdale MLA Bowinn Ma said it will make commuting on foot or by bike a lot more inviting.
“So many people in North Vancouver and across British Columbia are eager to embrace environmentally, socially responsible ways to move around so this is an excellent time for us to continue investing in more walking, cycling and rolling infrastructure,” she said. “I often commute to my office by bike and love seeing other North Shore residents on the trails. I look forward to seeing even more people out there in the years to come.”
