North Vancouver RCMP are warning the public after a string armed robberies targeting local businesses.
Investigators believe one man is responsible for eight knifepoint stick-ups at gas stations, convenience stores and fast food restaurants between April 3 and April 11.
Five of the robberies happened within the first three days, mostly in Lynn Valley, said Sgt. Peter DeVries, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman.
In each case, the suspect has worn a mask over the lower half of his face and a hood over his head. He demands the clerk hand over cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes before fleeing on foot.
As soon as the RCMP’s crime analyst spotted the pattern of similar offences, police stepped up patrols around similar businesses. More robberies happened in Lower Lynn and Lower Lonsdale, as recently as April 11.
“He slowed down, but it appears he’s not stopping. That’s why today we’re warning local businesses, and asking for the community’s help to identify him,” he said.
Surveillance images and witness descriptions reveal the suspect to be light skinned, in his early- to mid-20s, standing between five foot five and five foot 10.
If anyone does find themselves under threat, the best thing to do is comply and call 911 as soon as it is safe, DeVries said.
“Never put yourself in harm's way. If someone does come in to rob you, money can be replaced. Your life, your health, your safety can’t,” he said. “Your best bet is to comply and just be a good witness.”
While more people are out wearing masks thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has not changed the way police carry out investigations, DeVries said.
