CALGARY — Italian speedskater Davide Ghiotto has set a world record in the men's 10,000 metres in Calgary's Olympic Oval.

Ghiotto crossed the line in 12 minutes, 25.69 seconds to better the previous record of 12:30.74 set by Sweden's Nils van der Poel at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Ghiotto was the bronze medallist in Beijing and has won back-to-back world championship gold in the 10k.

He also earned back-to-back silver medals in the 5,000 metres at world championships.

Calgary's Olympic Oval has produced several world speedskating records since it was completed in 1987 for the Winter Olympics the following year.

Calgary's Oval and Salt Lake City's built for the 2002 Winter Games have a long-standing contest for which facility boasts the fastest ice in the world.
