Capilano Rugby Club is back in pink this Saturday

The annual event raises funds for breast cancer research

Players from Capilano Rugby Club will be hitting the pitch in pink this weekend, with the return of the organization’s annual fundraising event.

The club’s home at Klahanie Park in West Vancouver will be filled with matches on Saturday, while the club raises awareness and funds for breast cancer research. The event coincides with the start of the regular rugby season.

During the games, players from Capilano’s premier men’s and women’s teams wear special pink jerseys purchased by club supporters for $100 each, with proceeds going to BC Cancer Society. This year, 46 jerseys have been bought, says club spokesperson Chris Robinson.

Capilano has been running the pink day event annually since 2012 (excluding 2020 and 2021). To date, the club has raised just over $90,000 for BC Cancer, Robinson said.

The action kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with the Div. 3 men’s match against cross-inlet rivals, Burnaby Lake Rugby Club. Div. 2 women start at 11 a.m. against Langley Rugby Club.

The premier reserve men’s and premier women’s teams both play at 12:45 p.m. against Burnaby, followed by the premier men’s match, also against Burnaby, at 2:45 p.m.

There will be pink jersey presentations for the premier women’s team at 12:30 p.m. and the premier men’s team at 2:30 p.m.

The day’s events also include a bake sale, hoodie raffle, T-shirt toss, rugby shop raffle, silent auction and an evening barbecue starting at 5 p.m. Adult beverages will be provided by Blackfly Booze and Wildeye Brewing, starting at 1 p.m.
