North Vancouver’s Caitlin Shaw was named Player of the Match as Team Canada scored a historic win at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
On Sunday Canada defeated Germany 1-0 in the World Cup quarterfinals to book a spot in the semifinals for the first time in team history. The Canadians and Germans were locked in a scoreless battle for much of the game until Shaw went to work setting up the winning goal.
In the 83rd minute the attacking midfielder picked up the ball near the halfway line and raced into German territory before sliding a precise pass down the left wing to Kaila Novak. On her first touch Novak knocked a low cross into the box that found captain Jordyn Huitema who beat her defender to the ball and calmly fired a shot with her left foot into the bottom left corner of the net. The Canadians will now face their Concacaf rivals Mexico in the World Cup semifinals Wednesday in Montevideo, Uruguay. The match will be shown live Wednesday starting at 1:45 p.m. on TSN4.
