The powerhouse Collingwood Cavaliers kept an impressive medal streak alive by claiming bronze at the AA rugby championships Saturday in Abbotsford.
Collingwood’s title hopes were dashed in a 24-14 semifinal loss to Brentwood but the Cavaliers bounced back to claim their ninth straight provincial AA medal with a 29-7 win over Richmond’s R.A. McMath. The Wildcats took an early 7-0 lead in the bronze medal match but the Cavaliers charged back with three quick tries from Max McKee, Cam Bird and Cole Young to take a 15-7 lead into the halftime break.
Carter Proc kept the good times rolling with a try early in the second half. McMath pushed back but their comeback attempt was ended by Collingwood’s Ethan Lucke who intercepted a pass and ran 50 metres for a backbreaking try. Bird knocked in two conversions to round out the scoring.
Rockridge also took part in the AA championships, losing their opener against Brentwood but bouncing back with wins over G.W. Graham and Robert Bateman to finish in fifth place.
Jaxson Vickerstaff from Collingwood and Nick Maclean from Rockridge both earned spots on the Commissioner’s 15 all-star squad.
