North Vancouver golfer Bryn Parry is tied for the most PGA of British Columbia Championship victories following another tournament win.
Parry cruised to victory last Tuesday at Whistler Golf Club, capturing his fourth title win in the 2019 TaylorMade and adidas Golf PGA of BC Championship.
By winning the tournament for the fourth time, Parry is now tied with Scott Minni for the most PGA of BC Championship victories in the Professional Golfers Association’s modern era.
“It’s pretty cool,” says Parry, “because I remember playing with Scott when I was just getting started and he was already a brilliant player. One of the first tournaments that I ended up winning was at University Golf Course and Scott and I kind of had a battle that day.
“All these years later to have somebody tell me I’ve now won the same number of tournaments as a person that I consider to be the best player locally at the time – that’s pretty cool, that’s a pretty good accomplishment.”
Parry held a two-stroke lead over the 99-player field after landing 69 strokes in the tournament’s first round. He carded a tournament-low 66 strokes in the second round the following day to finish seven-under and win the tournament by a resounding six shots.
The tournament’s defending champion Kevin Stinson and the course’s 2011 winner Lindsay Bernakevitch shared second place, both finishing at one-under par.
Parry credits getting off to a strong start for his tournament success.
“The first day I went out and birdied the first hole and a made a good putt, so that kind of gets your feet under you,” he says.
While five players were sitting just two shots back of Parry’s lead for much of the course, he would end up creating distance after landing birdies on the first three holes on the second day of competition. “The last month I’ve really been working on my putting,” he notes.
Parry, 47, who teaches at Seymour Creek Golf Centre, had his name etched on the William Thompson Trophy and took home $6,300 in prize money.
Parry’s other PGA of BC titles came in 2000, 2008, and 2015, respectively.
