A West Vancouver Police constable is in hospital after crashing his motorcycle during a police pursuit Monday night.

Several officers were monitoring the north end of the Lions Gate Bridge around 6 p.m. when they noticed a beige Chevrolet Impala drive onto the bridge deck via the bus lane, according to the WVPD. The driver noticed the police and merged back into the proper lane, and when officers pursued, the Impala bolted south into oncoming traffic. Fearing for public safety, the officers chose not to chase the car, which had been reported stolen, but followed behind and dispatched the Vancouver Police Department.

A West Vancouver constable, tailing the vehicle on a motorcycle, crashed just after leaving the Stanley Park Causeway.

"The front wheel hit the center median and caused the police officer to be ejected. . . . The officer struck a pole and landed in the oncoming traffic lanes," said West Vancouver Const. Lisa Schmidtke, in a release.

VPD later tracked the vehicle down in East Vancouver and arrested two Alberta residents. The injured officer is expected to recover.
